Manufactured at an unknown date and later overhauled by either Springfield Armory or Augusta Arsenal between 1925-1953. The scarce, X-prefix serial number came into use in 1924 to replace numbers that had been stolen and recovered with defaced serial numbers or if the numbers had become damaged during the arsenal overhaul process. See pages 417-418 in "Colt .45 Service Pistols" by Clawson. This 1911-A1 example bears Remington Rand markings, .45 ACP cal., 5" barrel, and approx 99% arsenal era parkerized finish. The two-piece grips are in excellent condition, the markings are sharp, including "FJA" inspector markings (Frank J. Atwood) and "P" proofs. The action is crisp and bore is good with visible rifling and scattered erosion. The lot includes a copy of Appendix F, which provides further information on the serial number ranges for the 1st series variation. (C&R).
